ON THIS DAY
1-10-2020 Dylan Larkin scores game-winning shootout goal and tallies one during regulation against The Ottawa Senators to give Red Wings their 3rd straight win at home.
Christian Djoos
A former seventh-round pick (195th overall) of the Capitals in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Djoos spent five seasons in North America in Washington's system prior to being traded to the Ducks on Feb. 24, 2020.
Christian is still young at 26 years old, but from a development stand point, he won’t have too much more time to grow and should be performing as well as he ever will (suggested by Rob Vollman from hockey-graphs).
Djoos will join the other left shot defensemen on the team, so it looks to be increasingly likely that this was less about Djoos and more about finding ways to ensure Dennis Cholowski continues to develop, now that the AHL has announced it’s return.
Djoos Analytics
Last three seasons Expected Goals Statistics (From Natural Stat Trick)
xGF - 64.16, xGA - 65.93
xG% = 49.31%
It’s a pretty good looking number from someone who is a defensive defensemen first, but his offenseive zone start percentage, OZS% 62%, suggest his xG% should be higher. With more opportunity in the offensive zone, this means he is afforded more opportunity with less output.
These numbers still aren’t damning and more than likely this waiver claim will result in a Taxi Squad position. But it is still worth noting and mentioning.
Red Wings Power Plays
For the most part, we are pretty set on a 1st Power Play Line of Dylan Larkin center, Bertuzzi and Mantha on the wing, Dekeyser on the blue line, and Bobby Ryan as the 4th forward having played on the blue line and up front screening the goalie.
But what are the Wings going to do with that second power play line? With so much struggle in years past, it’s a wonder why something more drastic isn’t attempted, but for the most part we assume Fabbri, Zadina, and Rasmussen will be apart of that second power play unit. It’s also fair to assume Hronek will be getting that PP time too.
So Mike and Matt discuss the viability of Vladislav Namestnikov, Sam Gagne, Valterri Filippula, and Luke Glendenning all getting a shot. Let us know in the comments who YOU think should be a part of the second power play unit.
