Red Wings Rant Podcast
Hi everybody and welcome to Episode 81 of Red Wings Rant hosted by the Brothers of Discussion and brought to you by the Hockey Podcast Network.
We find a way to discuss the Detroit Red Wings for nearly a full hour despite the lack of news! Our list of topics today include:
Anthony Mantha and his contract negotiations
How is Anthony Mantha’s contract affected by Tyler Bertuzzi? Is Anthony Mantha going to get a short term contract? Is Mantha worth a long term contract? Does Mantha fit with the Yzerplan?
We believe there is a good debate to be had for all of these questions. Anthony Mantha could be the benefactor of Bertuzzi’s low number, considering the cap space left over. Don’t discount the idea that Mantha and Yzerman are in the same space on a salary number, but the extended negotiations are due to the contract length.
Mantha should want to mitigate risk in case of injury hurting his next contract and the Red Wings would like to ensure they aren’t signing a long-term contract with someone potentially prone to injury.
We play Be The GM and asked the Red Wings Nation if they would sign Mantha long term or short term. The results surprised us!
Did the Red Wings win the Tyler Bertuzzi contract negotiations?
What happens next with Tyler Bertuzzi? As briefly as possible, we do see the Red Wings winning this negotiation by a landslide. Bertuzzi’s comparable players have been paid almost $1 million more than he was awarded in through the arbitration hearing.
The next steps for Bertuzzi are the Red Wings is how this changes his next contract, should he perform at a high level, and if Yzerman really sees him as a major piece for the Stanley Cup contender he is trying to build.
Who would captain the Russian Five?
Sergei Federov? Igor Larionov? Should it be about skill or leadership? The fans voted for Igor Larionov to be the captain, but who would the Brothers of Discussion pick?
GM’s Should Try to Make More ‘Under the Table’ Handshake deals in sports
We also bring up a new version of contract negotiations involving handshake deals for teams with cap space. Why not sign a player to max your salary cap for one-year and go for a longer-term contract with a smaller cap hit going forward? What could possibly go wrong?
