Dylan Larkin and Filip Zadina Help Split with Carolina Hurricanes

Hi everybody and welcome to Episode 12 of Season 2 of Red Wings Rant hosted by the Brothers of Discussion and brought to you by the Hockey Podcast Network.  Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings, finally, have a home.

Let’s discuss the opening series with the Carolina Hurricanes and how well the Red Wings adjusted after that terrifying season opener to come out with a 4-2 win in game two.

Dylan Larkin is the NEW Captain of the Detroit Red Wings and his 3rd Period in Game Two showed us exactly the type of Captain he’s going to be.

Bobby Ryan scored his first goal with the Red Wings and looked rather strong in doing so.

That! And so much more on today’s episode of Red Wings Rant!

Game One vs Hurricanes

3-0 Carolina

This one hurt and we can’t linger too long on it. Despite Blashill saying the Red Wings played well for the first two periods, it did not look like it.

The Hurricanes dominated from the eye-ball test, analytically, and in the final score. Taking too much away from this game, however, was proved to be a bad choice, as the Red Wings severely improved in game two.

Despite all of the shortcomings, Thomas Greiss is the second goalie in the league when measuring goals allowed vs expected. Basically, he should have allowed more goals than the actual results. Greiss was our hero in game one and we should expect him to turn out more high-level games like this as we move forward.

Game Two vs Hurricanes

4-2 Detroit

The Red Wings looked like an actual hockey team, in-game two! And they still got tremendous goaltending from Jonathan Bernier. If you take another peek at the graph above, you’ll see Bernier falling into the sixth spot in regards to goals allowed vs expected.

But that’s not all! Filip Zadina turned his scrappy, tenacious play into a puck stealing, playmaking, winning performance. His two assists were crucial in lighting the fire underneath the Red Wings roster and pushing them to own most of the 2nd period in regards to goals, puck possession, and momentum.

Our new Captain, Dylan Larkin, also performed like a Captain. We get into more of the nitty-gritty, during the podcast, but Dylan not only supplied the Red Wings with 2 goals, but he also gave up on an empty-net goal and tried to hand off to Vladislav Namestnikov near the end of regulation as well.

Up Next: Columbus Blue Jackets (0-2, -5 Goal Differential)

Game One: Monday, 1-18-2021, 12 PM EST

Game Two: Tuesday, 1-19-2021, 7:30 PM EST

Blue Jackets 2021 Season

3-1 loss to NSH

5-2 loss to NSH

Picked to go 3-6 on average

2019-20 vs Blue Jackets

0-3 vs Blue Jackets Last Year

11-21-2019, 5-4, 35% CF%

12-17-2019, 5-3, 38% CF%

2-7-2020, 2-0, 34% CF%

I am expecting the Wings to play better than the numbers last year suggest. Much like the series against the HUrricanes, I expect the Red Wings to split this series. While the Hurricanes are a much better team, the WIngs were still able to steal a win by limiting chances and trying to play a low-event style of defense.

Considering the Red Wings match up better with the Blue Jackets, I think it’s fair to assume a win is attainable during the early week series.
