Top Five Results to Come out of SummerSlam Weekend

The WWE will just keep rolling until this entire planet is covered in ashes. Why do I believe that? Because of the Thunderdome. Because Roman Reigns returned at SummerSlam and is right back in the main event picture. And because no matter how mad we should be at Vince McMahon, everyone turns on their heart light for him when his birthday comes around.

No matter the problems we are facing as a global community, the problems we face as wrestling fans, or the problems we individually fight against in our personal lives, we all were glued to the TV for SmackDown, NXT TakeOver XXX and SummerSlam.

Not gonna lie, either. I make these claims like I am better than other people who do not voice observations of WWE’s racism, sexism, and tone-deaf storytelling, but I am in fact, much worse. Because I see all of these things and only ask others to stop watching, while I grab my soda, popcorn, and squeeze my bubbly cheeks into my favorite recliner.

I’m assuming that you might struggle with the same things, so I wanted to create this story to help ease the pain of being a wrasslin’ fan and focus on some of the positives!

Now my brother and I are complete goofuses, so we usually find the most joy from moments that affect us on a personal level. Meaning our favorite wrestlers get involved, we get to boast about a hot take is correct, or we’ve met the wrassler in person and now we love them. But I will try and be as level-headed as possible with this one. Because sometimes anger gets in the way too.

Damian Priest wins & Velveteen Dream Loses

It cannot be talked about enough, so now we’re adding our pokers to the flame: The WWE needs to address the return of the Velveteen Dream in a public format.

Dream was accused a few months ago of predatorily attacking underage fans. With multiple pieces of evidence online, it is very hard to ignore it and just pretend like it doesn’t exist. That being said, I am happy that Dream lost, because nothing is more ‘WWE’ than seeing Vince McMahon double down on poor decision making.

We did get a win from a highly talented Damian Priest. He is an exciting superstar who has the ability to turn heads with his athletic move set complemented by his size. We speak about the Hybrid Superstar on the podcast all the time: Dominik Dijakovic, Drew McIntyre, and Keith Lee are at the top of that list. Priest isn’t as gravity defying as the men I just mentioned, but he has that potential and has shown us in the past that he isn’t afraid to attempt something new.

For the WWE, they know you can get high flying action from a guy who is AJ Style’s size from any corner of the globe. But the Lee’s, Dijakovic’s and McIntyre’s are few and far between. If they want to keep building this roster to feature these hybrid superstars, Priest needed to win the title.

The ball is in his court now. Some fans on Twitter have been clamoring for Damian to get his shot. In my opinion, I’m happy he is getting that shot, but we haven’t seen enough from him yet for me to see that top tier, main event, superstar. Maybe, in this case, the title can help build the character and Priest will run into some confidence and higher-level mic work.

Roman Reigns Returns

Oh, cool! You did not need to see this on the list? Cause the whole world was talking about it? SO WHAT! Maybe I want satisfaction!

Anyways.  Roman Reigns returned and I have since come down from the ‘high’ of seeing his (new) toothy grimace. So, I’m not AS excited as I was, but there is still a lot of fun to be had here.

Why? Because of the Fiend. Because the Fiend has been the focus of all major shows for WWE. Because the Fiend took down John Cena! The Fiend gets promos for his promos! The Fiend is a top ticket and I can’t imagine that the WWE is just going to let that fact go by the wayside (because they helped create it!)

If the Fiend was some indie darling creation, sure. But not when he was created by Vince and his cronies (like…even if you disagree here on who created the Fiend. Vince gives the ‘go-ahead’, so he’ll gladly take credit for it.)

Roman returning isn’t a death sentence to the Fiend. If anything, it’s possibly the release from prison. Braun Strowman prison. A prison that looked to be in his sight if Braun was given another shot at the title.

Strowman can only do so much and Bray and the Fiend have a ton of stories to continue to tell. The revenge tour must keep rolling (as the Fiend has taken out former Wyatt feuds with Cena, Bryan, Rollins) and Reigns is the best possible candidate right now.

I have faith in the WWE to not screw this up! To not ruin the Fiend’s momentum. And to only put a modicum of pressure on the Reigns accelerator. (Afterall, he is a major talent and shouldn’t be ignored).

The Halloween months are coming and who better to put on the Hell in a Cell poster than that crazy monster?

Pat McAfee and Dominik Mysterio Look Strong

The results of the matches were perfect. So regardless of the level of story, athleticism, and entertainment we got from McAfee and Mysterio, we could always be happy that Adam Cole and Seth Rollins were victorious.

That being said…HOLY F’N CRAP DID THESE TWO SHOW US MORE THAN WE COULD HAVE EVER ASKED FOR!

Mysterio proved that it totally runs in the family and McAfee has me believing in a long-term title run in his future.

Mysterio will do well because his father is one of the most beloved superstars of all time. So I think we’re just happy that Dominik won’t have to worry about hanging on his father’s coattails forever. The kid has got game.

But how terrible would it have been if we had to watch the cocky turd, Pat McAfee, strut up and down the ring, talking trash, and not have any in-ring ability to back it up? I’m pretty sure we’d be grinding our gums together from another McAfee promo since our molars would be gone.

Obviously his cocky persona has worked for other wrestlers in the past, but because he turned in an A+ performance (and honestly, against one of the best in business, so this isn’t going to look as good against Damian Priest) I need more McAfee in my life. Like…don’t get me wrong…I still hate his stupid face and his attitude. But the man can spit on the mic and now he proved that punters are athletes too. Give this guy 20 more matches and a title shot. I’ll be glued to the TV and you should be too.

Asuka Walks Away with a Title

Easy, peasy, one-two-threesy. Asuka is easily one of the best wrestlers in the business (notice how I didn’t qualify it, you monsters) and now that she’s been given more creative freedom in her promo work, she is must-see-tv. She will make that title into something special and whoever she feuds with will be elevated along with it.

But the best part of Sasha Banks going down? The feverish, hate-stares that will result in our huge fall feud of Bayley and Sasha.

This “Will-They, Won’t-They” is juicier than Ross and Rachel from Friends. And the longer we wait for it, I think the more we’re going to yearn for it. I can admit that I’ve felt and said the complete opposite in the past, but here I am. Still thinking about it. Still talking about it. Still hoping for it. Needing to see Bayley and Sasha break up.

Now more than ever it feels right around the corner.

Every Champion Makes Sense

The best part about SummerSlam is that every champion makes sense. We don’t need a Game of Thrones mess at the end of SummerSlam. I don’t want to question why Jon Snow made such a boner of a move and how the Mother of Dragons would go down so easily, for the rest of my life. From a SummerSlam perspective, I don’t have to.

Instead, we get to celebrate the beginning of the end for Bayley and Sasha. Spit our green mist in honor of Asuka’s victory. Talk Less and Clay More with Drew. Drool at all of the Fiendish character development. Now that Keith Lee got called up we can count down with Karrion Kross till his next title feud. Tick…Tock…And then those tag titles exist.

One of the more underrated victories was Apollo Crews over MVP. The Hurt Business could use another member and I’m hoping this pushes the possibility of MVP begging and pleading for Crews to come to the dark side.

WWE in the Fall

The fall is sometimes confusing and can get messy while they try to nickel and dime the ratings. With these worthwhile champions, a new Thunderdome and a crazy new life we all lead with COVID still keeping us at home, I am pretty excited for what we have in store during football season (teehee).
