Matt Riddle Makes his NXT Debut...and People Care About his Boots?

The Super King of Bros made his in-ring debut for NXT at a live show…and the hype was in full force. Matt Riddle got the crowd into a frenzy, he apparently felt more excited than he ever has (according to interview posted on NXT’s social media accounts) and he won the damn match! Great all-around! So what does everyone want to talk about? His choice of footwear. Or lack there of.
I get it. That video is just fun to post.
The Super King of Bros is known for his mix of wrestling and mixed martial arts, so to better sell that dynamic, he’s comes out looking more ready for an octagon battle than a WWE match. What fans of Riddle were concerned about was the WWE telling Riddle ‘no’ to performing this way.
What I can’t believe is: 1. Wrestling fans are so incredibly happy that this is a thing. 2. Wrestling fans don’t understand why the WWE asks wrestlers to put some damn shoes on.
There is only one guy I can think of who should actually be happy by this decision and his name is Quentin Tarantino.
But the supposed backlash from fans…if Riddle was forced to wear boots…is insane. Its hilarious…but also insane. It makes me think of all of the kids out there who have loving, caring parents, but then go to school and talk about how much their parents suck.
Dad: “Son, don’t forget to wear a helmet. And stay away from any dark alleys. And here’s extra money in case you get lost or need it. Oh! And the keys to the car. Don’t want you walking in this weather. And if you’re hungry, I made some chicken. Feel free to grab some on the way out. I’ll be here doing your laundry and getting all of your homework done.”
Son: “Screw you, Dad! I can’t believe you’re trying to ruin my life!”
I don’t have kids in case you’re thinking I’m trying to vent my frustrations.
Obviously the WWE doesn’t want to purposefully sabotage a popular wrestler, right out of the gate. They wait until I become a huge fan of them before they start them on a path of destruction.
While I didn’t really want to complain about Riddle’s debut, I…guess I just did. Riddle joining the WWE is exciting, despite me taking every chance to try and ruin it. He’s an enthusiastic kid how is quite athletic. I’ve seen his matches with Cody Rhodes and Zack Sabre Jr from this past year, and then an epic bout with Katsuyori Shibata from 2017. There is plenty of evidence in just those three matches to build up Riddle. Hopefully the transition to televised wrestling will be easy for him, so we can see the full potential of Riddle come to fruition.
With that, hopefully we aren’t far from seeing Riddle’s debut on the WWE Network. If anything positive is to come from Riddle’s barefoot style it’s that the WWE wants him to stick to his brand and what made him popular on the indie scene. If he’s successful, then hopefully we’ll see a bit more trust infused with the individual performances for him and everyone to follow in his…footsteps.
