Anthony Mantha Contract Signing Analysis

It’s official! The Detroit Red Wings and Anthony Mantha have come to terms on a 4-year deal worth $5.7 million AAV.

Anthony Mantha is a key part of the Red Wings core pieces now, but it is a regular debate on if Mantha will be apart of the core when the Red Wings are ready to compete for the Stanley Cup again.

This contract number and term say that Steve Yzerman is committed to Mantha and to make sure if he is going to become an elite Right-Wing in the NHL, Mantha does it in Detroit.

Mantha’s New Contract Analysis

Much like our analysis for Tyler Bertuzzi’s contract, we’ve decided to take a deep dive into comparable players across the league to see how this deal stacks up. I will let you in on a spoiler, Steve Yzerman seems to have nailed it again.

We take a look at:

Anthony Mantha, TJ Oshie, Filip Forsberg, Brendan Gallagher, Patric Hornqvist, Teuvo Teravainen, Blake Wheeler, Jakub Voracek, & Mike Hoffman

While we always say this model isn’t yet perfected, we are confident in our selection of comparable players by the association of individual Expected Goals and Points per 60 minutes. Both are good representations of what a forward brings to a team from the basis of ratios as opposed to losing fair comparisons by analyzing season totals.

We’ve also dissected the signed by analyzing comparable players and the Weighted Projected Point per dollar spent. In our model, we discovered that for wingers at Mantha’s production level, teams are willing to spend around $100K per point. Anthony Mantha comes in around $90K, making him about a 10% savings compared to the rest of the league.

Flexibility for the Red Wings

One key aspect we discuss in the video is the length of the term and how important it is. It’s not too long and could be at the perfect time for Mantha to be playing for his next contract at the same time Lucas Raymond should be ready to take another step and whoever we draft this year does too!

Prashanth gave a quick take comparing the Mantha contract to another former Red Wings, Tomas Tatar with this tweet.
